Empire Vale Primary School | Frogs check-in to new Hotel

The very first frog hotel in the Northern Rivers and possibly even Australia has been built by Empire Vale Primary School students and15 green tree frogs have already checked-in. The Fog Hotels were created by the students to help declining frog populations and keep the mosquitos away. Front and centre on their menu, frogs love nothing more than to snack on mosquitos. 

There have been no cane toads move into the Frog Hotels and the students are currently researching if toads have the same hand/ foot structure to cling
onto the pipes.The students produced an instruction booklet with a list of
the indigenous plants they used so that you can have some fun
these Christmas holidays.

Goolmangar Public School | Tiny plant world

Goolmangar Public School created tiny terrariums and mesocosms each with their very own mini-climates and water cycle. These closed ecosystems ensure the amount of water stays the same and gave the students a real sense of the preciousness of fresh water. The students produced an instruction booklet with a list of the indigenous plants they used so that you can have some fun these Christmas holidays.

Dunoon Public School | Seed bombs

Fresh ideas were certainly flowing from students at Dunoon Public School this year . They not only took out the Primary School title with their Spray Safe Innovation but were also finalist for their Seed Bomb idea. The students experimented with making seed bombs to be dropped by drones to regenerate rainforest in hard to access areas. The application could be super handy after the ravaging effects of high intensity fires. 

Wyrallah Road Public School | Pop-up popper spouts

Students set out to find a solution to the plastic bits on the sides of poppers menacing our water ways or ending up in the trash. They put their imaginations to work and trialed a number of options as a budding scientists and came up with a cool pop-up popper spout to say goodbye to that extra plastic.

St Ambrose Catholic Primary School | Waste reduction website

Students set their sustainability sights high by building a waste reduction website from the ground up. No easy feat considering they made all their own content including a range of engaging and FUN recycling activities. They involved their entire school and even the community to show their school commitment to sustainability and green innovation.

Lismore Heights Public SchooL | Bee Friendly Fertiliser

Students tackled the BIG issue of….BEES and pollination! Their idea was to come up with a bee friendly fertilizer to help plants and declining bee populations affected by the nasty chemicals found in synthetic fertilizers. And they did just that, creating a fertilizer from organic compounds which will keep the bees safe.

2020 HIGH SCHOOL FINALISTS

McCauley Catholic College – Clarence Valley Gift Card   

With regional town’s right across Australia severely affected by COVID-19, McCauley Catholic College students stepped up to help the Clarence business communities quiet streets and closed shops. The students focus was on creating a gift card to support small business and encourage people to buy fresh, local produce. They talked with local business’s, the Chamber of Commerce, created
a website, Insta and FB page (please link to) as well as promoting the gift card through radio. Everyone in the community got on board and was thankful for
the students innovation and initiative.
